If traveling to Canada during your visit to Washington some purchases made in that country may be subject to duty upon reentry into the U.S. Call for more information. Proof of U.S. citizenship may be requested by the Canadian authorities at any Point-of-Entry during a random check. To avoid any unnecessary delays be prepared by carrying the required documents. One of the following would satisfy their Customs officers: a valid U.S. passport, an original or certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate, an original selective service or draft card, or U.S. naturalization papers. Green cards, preferably with passports, are required for non-citizens with permanent U.S. residency. Foreign citizens need a valid passport. A passport or birth certificate is required for all minors. Children under 16 unaccompanied by a parent will also need to have a parent's letter of permission. Travelers with pets should carry proof of a rabies vaccination within the last 36 months. Tours traveling by motor coach are subject to certain regulations; organizers should contact the Canadian Immigration Center in advance for details. During the peak summer season expect long lines on both sides of the border - the wait can sometimes be up to 1.5 hours.
